Modern Pin Ups: How Vintage Style Evolved Today
Being a personal style blogger requires getting your photo taken regularly for outfit posts and filming tutorials for YouTube, how have you found this and what do you feel when you look back at your earliest posts now? Your style will probably evolve from when you first start out (I know mine has!) and that’s ok too. Winning the title of Miss Pinup NZ 2015 would mean that I have come such a long way from being lost and wondering about who I am as a person. The view she had of being so comfortable in your own skin made me realise that no matter what love what you have, embrace it and others will too! A culture that I have always been drawn to, the music I adore and the fashion and styling I wear everyday. Hotrods and greasers are my weakness and i don’t mind helping out in the garage.
I love hot rods, tattoos and tight clothes. We chatted to Bettie about how to embrace the pinup style, what it was like to win MPUNZ and how her life has changed since then. Hamiltonian Bettie Rage (real name Anjelique Jones) lives and breathes the pinup style and even manages a vintage-inspired diner where the red lipped look is part of her uniform. As a child my friends has crushes on Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Nick Carter and the cute one from Hanson. I found a lovely model and a fantastic… Fashion is her other creative outlet and she loves blending pin up with witchy, spooky styles. Her bright and colourful style, can-do attitude and sunny personality have made her a much-loved and respected feature of the New Zealand Pinup community. I started swing dancing when I was still coming out of my ‘bad place’ and I think that gave me a new found love and respect for my body. So much of my hatred and self-loathing towards my body stemmed from not fitting into the mainstream mould and so to have these pieces of clothing that fitted my curves and made me feel incredible comfortable in my own skin was revolutionary. I feel sad because they are probably lonely, unhappy and perhaps even don’t have people close that show them love.
